This new party theme and venue was a smashing success, with more than 100 people enjoying the food, drink and social- izing. The highlight of the evening was a silent and live auction, facilitated by Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers. Thanks to some amaz- ing items donated by generous members, and the excitement of the auction, NUCA of DC raised more than $5,000 to be awarded as scholarships by the newly established NUCA of DC Scholarship Fund, beginning in spring 2018! Advocacy Success of NUCA of DC Building strong relationships on behalf of NUCA members brings positive re- sults. NUCA of DC has established criti- cal issues meetings each quarter to ad- dress the concerns of its members with multiple organizations. In November, the group had very productive sessions with DC Water and the DC Department of Transportation. Both agencies shared and announced improved payment proce- dures, which will result in expedited pay- ments to utility contractors and increased transparency in the payment process. Other results of these advocacy meetings include a focus in streetlight marking improvement, workforce development initiatives, and faster implementation of spec changes. 38 Utility Contractor | March/April 2018
