GROUNDBREAKING NEWS NUCA Washington Summit Set for May 22-24 NUCA's annual advocacy event, the Washington Summit, May 22-24, is, without a doubt, the most effective and reliable tool available to you for making the priorities of utility and excavation contractors a reality and combating government and regulatory overreach. With infrastructure near the top of the Congress' and the Trump administration's priorities, now is the time for those of us in the industry to get together and make our voices heard. It's time for America to start building again, particularly now that a great deal of movement in water infrastructure funding is taking place at the federal level. It is imperative that your elected officials hear from you to keep this momentum going. There is literally no better chance to put a face to the issues and to speak with legislators than at the Washington Summit during an election year. Right now, there is a spotlight on many of the issues we've been advocating for and with the election looming large in the minds of our elected officials, we have a rare opportunity to bring a powerful message to Washington. As utility and excavation contractors, you have a real understanding of what the state of the nation's infrastructure is, and more, you can speak to what's really at stake. With elections coming up, and the state of politics today, your Senators and Representatives will be especially receptive to what you have to say. Right now, we have a better opportunity to affect the lawmakers who are already contemplating the issues important to our industry than we have had in a long time. The two-and-a-half-day Summit program is designed to ensure that you are as prepared as possible to hold meaningful and lasting exchanges with your Senators and Representatives. The first day features expert speakers who will inform you about the climate on the Hill and who will give you a behind-the-scenes view of the workings of Congress. The NUCA Legislative Briefing will ensure you are knowledgeable and ready to effectively speak with your elected officials about the key issues our industry faces. The second day will be a full day of hitting Capitol Hill, pressing the flesh, and discussing what is important to you and the industry, face-to-face, with your lawmakers. We'll wrap up the day with our Capitol Hill Reception, a rare opportunity to make a lasting impression on members of Congress and staffers in a social and fun setting. There is no better chance for you to make the contacts necessary for the success of our industry than at this year's Summit. Kara Habrock, NUCA's Immediate Past Chairwoman, reflects on this important event: "The Summit has helped me develop solid relationships with my representatives and staff in Washington and their field offices. With infrastructure receiving so much attention, now is the time to come to Washington and push for legislation that creates mechanisms to fund infrastructure." 12 Utility Contractor | March/April 2018
